LED Strip Light as the +Lichtlijn Linked to Traffic Lights Trials Warn 'Smartphone Zombies' in Bodegraven
Officials in Bodegraven-Reeuwijk, about 25 miles south of Amsterdam in the western Netherlands, are running trials of new traffic lights which warn pedestrians staring at their mobile phones that they are about the cross the road. ‘Distracted walking’ has becoming an increasingly serious problem.
The new traffic light consists of a led lighting strip in the pavement which officials hope will alert ‘smartphone zombies’ who are looking at the road not at traffic. ‘Social media, games, WhatsApp and music are major distractions in traffic,’ said town alderman Kees Oskam. ‘We may not be able to change this trend, but we can anticipate problems.’ The illuminated LED strips of light can change color and are synced with their corresponding traffic lights; as soon as the normal crossing light turns red or green, so, too, does the one in the ground.
The +Lichtlijn, as the traffic light is officially called, consists of LED strip light, is linked to existing traffic lights and changes colour at the same time. Dutch road safety organisation Veilig Verkeer Nederland (VVN) said it did not think the new lighting would be a solution.
Nevertheless, schools in Bodegraven-Reeuwijk that are near the test +Lichtlijn are reportedly excited about the pilot program, hoping it will increase safety.
